Chassis is glass-fiber reinforced polycarbonate and stainless steel, similar to EOS D30. Has pixel size of 7.4 microns (square). Viewfinder Display now shows counter of frames remaining at burst-mode speeds, shots remaining on CF card (if 8 or less) and flash exposure compensation in use. Viewfinder has new Laser Matte screen with improved manual focus contrast, and adjustable diopter with range -3 to +1 diopters.
Can indicate selected AF point with red superimposed illumination similar to EOS-1D. Focus point can be selected automatically or manually. Focus modes are One-Shot or AI Servo AF. Focusing speed and performance are same as EOS D30. AF working range is EV 0.5 - 18 (1.5 stops more low-light sensitivity than EOS D30).
Evaluative metering algorithm improved relative to EOS D30. Exposure compensation possible in any Auto exposure mode. Automatic bracketing possible in all modes, 3 shots at up to +/- 2EV steps. Has bulb mode for long exposures.
Compatible with Canon EX-series Speedlites, manual flash only with 420EZ, 430EZ and 540EZ flashes, non-dedicated shoe-mount flashes, studio strobes via PC socket. Has E-TTL 35-zone evaluative flash metering with EX Speedlites. Compatible with Wireless E-TTL with ratio control. Has Flash Exposure Lock with 9.5% partial flash reading via AEL button. Has +/- 2EV Flash Exposure Compensation. Flash sync speed is 1/200 second with built-in flash and EX-series Speedlites. Hi-speed Flash Sync possible with EX-series Speedlites to 1/4000 second. Ambient Exposure Compensation possible with flash by turning quick control dial. Flash Exposure Bracketing possible with Speedlite 550EX, Macro Ring Lite MR-14EX, Macro Twin Lite MT-24EX.
Shutter lag is 100ms when prefocused, mirror black-out time is 300ms at 1/60 and faster shutter speeds. Contrast, sharpness, saturation and color tone can all be adjusted in 3 steps by user. Can review image automatically after capture or by pressing 'display' button. Can playback single image, single image with info (15 items) and histogram, highlight alert (flashes overexposed areas), 9 thumbnails, or magnified view. Turn control dial to go from shot to shot. Has two new custom functions over EOS D30 - C.Fn 14 (turn off illumination of AF points in viewfinder) and C.Fn 15 (shutter release impossible without CF card in camera). C.FN 1 (long-exposure noise reduction) has been removed.
